Post-Birth Healing Bath
A post-birth healing bath is a time-honoured herbal ritual, used for soothing soreness, easing inflammation, combating infection and supporting emotional rest after childbirth.
Marigold – 2 tbsp (skin-soothing, traditionally valued for its gentle healing properties)
Chamomile – 2 tbsp (soothing, historically valued for calming the body and mind)
Lavender – 2 tbsp (antiseptic, long used to promote relaxation and sleep)
Witch Hazel Bark or Leaves – 1 tbsp (astringent, traditionally associated with supporting skin comfort)
Rose Petals – a handful (traditionally revered for being gentle and heart-soothing)
Horsetail - (astringent, historically valued for its toning and skin-supportive properties)
Lady’s Mantle - (astringent, historically valued for its soothing and toning properties)
Optional: Add 1 cup Epsom salts for extra muscle relaxation.
How to:
Place herbs in a large heatproof bowl or muslin bag.
Pour 1 litre boiling water over them, cover, and steep for 20 minutes.
Strain (if loose) and add the infusion to a warm bath.
Soak for 15–20 minutes, breathing slowly and deeply.
This is not medical advice but for informational purposes only.
Baths should only be taken when advised by the midwife or doctor (usually after stitches or tearing has healed enough). Otherwise, use as a sitz bath (just enough water to cover hips).
Consult your doctor for contraindications with other medications and allergies, where pregnant, nursing or have underlying health conditions. Please do your own due diligence.
